I have searched the internet and can’t seem to find a similar issue to what I’m experiencing. After following Steve on YouTube for years with console repairs, I’m hoping that someone here can narrow down my problem.
I bought a backwards compatible PS3 (model CECHC02) a few months ago. Whilst it played PS1 & PS3 games with no problem, it couldn’t load a PS2 disc; as soon as I click on the disc icon the screen would stay black and the controller would turn off. If I pressed the PS button on the controller it wouldn’t respond. I could eject the PS2 game but the screen wouldn’t revert back to the XMB. I can’t even turn off the console via the power button; I would have to switch it off at the back.
I have fixed PlayStation consoles in the past so I was hoping the lens just needed a clean. That didn’t work. After leaving it for over a month I returned to this problematic console. Again, PS1 & PS3 discs played fine but this time the PS2 disc icon wouldn’t show up. The analog clock just kept spinning. I ejected it and reinserted the PS3 disc that was working before. Now this wasn’t reading. Tried the PS1 game again…also the same issue. I tried every other media format and still the same thing = the clock icon would just keep spinning with no end in sight + there was zero sound from the disc drive in actually reading the disc.
I decided to swap out the entire disc drive from another fat PS3 I had + swap over the daughterboard since each one is tied to the console itself. I was back in business. Every format I tried (PS1, PS3, CD, DVD, blu-ray) would work. But, once again, PS2 would still have the same issue as I mentioned above.
It’s so bizarre to put a completely different disc drive in and I’m back at square one… Is there an issue on the motherboard that needs to be addressed? Something to do with the PS2 chip? I also swapped out the HDD and did a full system restore (that took over 3hrs) which didn’t help.
What do I need to do to get my PS2 games finally running on this backwards compatible PS3?
