PS5 EDM-010 Fully Boots, No Image

I got a PS5 EDM-010 from a customer recently. A few shops have looked at it, but only one trustworthy one had it. The first shop did all the work while all the others claimed the first shop messed up.

BLUF: First guy got it in a no-power state. He replaced a bunch of components and got the console to power on, but no image. Like, it boots to white light, I can hear the sounds of the dashboard, and all pins give a solid reading. Second and third shops just blamed the first guy for it not displaying but couldn’t do anything to diagnose. They even replaced the HDMI port and left like, 6 pins not even connected.

ANYWHO, after replacing the port, I replaced the encoder (which was actually just fine, but just to rule it out), and checked a bunch of stuff. Here’s what I found:

-Power sequence of this board is VERY odd. When I first apply power, it pulls .284A, and drops to 0V about 2 seconds later (though the console boots?!)

-Pin 39 (CEC) of the encoder is outputting 2.9v

-Q7006 (DTA044EUBTL) has 2.9V on pin 1, 3.3V on pin 2, and 0V pin 3, which is odd.

-IC7011 and IC7012, both MM3411A18NRE have 3.3V standby on CE pins (both part of PSW_HDMI_MAIN) which should only have voltage when powered?!

-No UART codes thrown at all

-RAM bank 3 visually appears to get warmer than any of the others under thermal; this is the only thermal anomaly I can find

That’s about all I can find. If I’m not mistaken, PSW_HDMI_MAIN come from the SB, so it’s possible the SB is leaking the 3.3V line???

Here’s the HDMI port diode readings. They do appear a bit on the high side, but nothing crazy:

PSW_HDMI_MAIN should only be high in power on state. If this line is high in standby, I would assume that there is an issue with the southbridge.


That was my assumption as well. I replaced the SB with a good one I had from a donor (at least I’m pretty sure its good) but the same issue persists with PSW-HDMMI_MAIN.

So we are looking for a spot where the PSW_HDMI_MAIN is feeded 3.3V by something else in standby.
Do you have continuity between 3.3V standby and the 3.3V PSW_HDMI_MAIN at the 1.8V dcdc converter?

If you’re talking about IC7011 pins 1 and 3, no there is no continuity.

Here’s something interesting. I pulled out an EDM-020 board I have that powers up and displays (I believe it has an APU issue as it boot loops and artifacts). I’m running tests between the two boards, and even the 020 has the same initial power sequence amps and power present on pin 3 of the same IC7011 and IC7012.

That’s fairly odd…

Additionally:

I been comparing values with an EDM-020 (it powers on and displays, just boot loops and artifacts).

So far, all values seem similar between the two boards; the amp readings during powerup are the same (right about .285 amps, drop down to 0 amp after about 2 or 3 seconds), all values on the power switches (especially IC7011 and IC7012, both have voltage at pin 3), both have 5V to pin 8 and 3.3V to pin 9 (with HDMI plugged in).

All caps, resistors, and diodes give very similar readings. I have no reason to believe the encoder is an issue; I replaced it, reflowed it, and ensured all pins have a solid connection, but still no image.

I have to be missing something here… but what?

Please check with only power cord connected to the PS5.

In standby the enabling pin 3 (red markings) at IC7011 and IC7012 should read 0V.
After pressing start button this should turn to 3.3V.

Yeah I definitely get the full 3.3V at both spots with only the power cable plugged in. I’m aware they should only have voltage present when powered on.

It’s odd that the EDM-020 I’m using to test is showing the same symptoms on those pins but still displays.

Seems to be a hard case.

The sound you hear from the dashboard is part of the HDMI signal stream. So the HDMI chip is outputting HDMI data to the display.

Do the eight DisplayPort inputs (pins 4 + 5, 9 + 10, 12 + 13, 17 + 18) at the HDMI chip have correct readings?

I get .830V on each of those. Same voltage drop on the opposite side where the data lines come out of the chip.

So here’s something I just noticed. Voltage drop readings are fairly normal all around, but about .01v ish higher. My standby voltage readings are a bit weird compared to your image on some pins. I get the following:

61 - 1.8v
63 - .004v
66 - .9v
67 - 1.8v
68 - .003v
69 - .003v
74 - 3.3v
78 - .015v (drops to about .002v)
78 - .025v (drops to about .002v)
80 - 1.8v

I also get 1.8v STBY on the caps at pin 1, 22, and 59, and .9v on the cap at pin 24.

I get the same readings on the EDM-020 board that I’m comparing values with.

On the backside of the APU are eight caps at the DisplayPort lines.
I would check if every cap has its ~370 mV diode mode at the APU side.

They’re a bit on the high side at about .391v. This is SO weird… everything seems fairly normal with all the readings at the port, maybe a little on the high side on the voltage drop readings, but nothing I’ve tested is appearing “bad”.

It’s honestly frustrating lol

Silly question. Can I ask you to post your work on the Panasonic and HDMI port? Zoomed-in, high-resolution photos.

My digital microscope ain’t the greatest to take pictures from.

I can guarantee all pins are making contact with the board; there’s a couple that seem questionable from the angle, but I’ve confirmed they’re good.

I’ve tested voltage drops on all and they all give readings. A little higher than expected though.
