PS5 EDM-010 | No Video/Audio Output

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here, so first of all I’d like to thank everyone who takes the time every day to answer questions and help others.

I’m a repair technician and I’ve already repaired quite a large number of PS5 consoles with all kinds of different faults.

This time I have an EDM-010 on the bench. The console appears to complete the boot sequence normally (at least judging by the LED behavior) and stays powered on without any issues.

The problem is a complete lack of HDMI output. There is no video signal, and I can’t get any audio either.

The customer says that the problem appeared after a few days of thunderstorms, although he wasn’t particularly clear about whether the console suddenly stopped working, showed any symptoms beforehand, or anything else. Unfortunately, getting accurate information from customers sometimes seems impossible… almost as if they’re afraid of being judged :joy:

So far, I’ve carried out the following checks:

• HDMI port and Panasonic IC diode-mode measurements: all readings appear correct. Some values are slightly lower than the reference values I found, but they are consistent with each other. For example, lines that should measure around .832 all measure around .804 on my meter, so I suspect this could simply be due to the multimeter itself.

• Standby and power rail voltages: all the voltages I checked are present and consistent with the expected values.

• HDMI EMI filters: tested and working correctly.

• Capacitors around the APU: no shorts detected.

• UART diagnostics: I’m not getting any errors at all.

However, I noticed something that I initially considered unrelated: F5401 has no voltage on either side of the fuse.

I temporarily put this issue aside because I assumed it was a secondary fault and unrelated to the lack of HDMI output. However, I’m now wondering if that assumption was wrong.

Could F5401 actually supply a rail that is required for the video/HDMI circuitry?

I’ll admit that I haven’t properly investigated the F5401 issue yet, nor have I checked that part of the schematic, because I convinced myself that the two problems were unrelated. If I remember correctly, I thought this rail was responsible for the 5V supply to the Blu-ray drive.

But while writing this post, I’m starting to question that assumption :joy:

At the moment, I’m considering three possibilities:

  1. Faulty HDMI port.
I think this is unlikely considering the measurements, but I would probably need to buy an HDMI analyzer/tester to completely rule it out.

  2. Faulty Panasonic HDMI IC.
The chip could appear electrically normal during diode-mode and voltage measurements, but still fail internally and therefore not actually process or output the video signal.

  3. The missing voltage at F5401 is actually the root cause of the problem.
In other words, it may not be a secondary fault at all, and fixing whatever is preventing that rail from coming up could potentially solve the entire issue.

Just to clarify, no repair work or component replacement has been carried out on the console so far. Before doing any kind of intervention, I prefer to perform all the necessary measurements and diagnostic checks first. I try to avoid replacing components blindly without having enough evidence to identify the actual fault.

I hope someone can give me a few pointers or put me back on the right track :joy::ok_hand:

Thanks in advance!

F5401 will only carry 5v from 5v_main when Q5404 been told to switch on by southbridge, so you observation is normal. And it is not related to HDMI circuit unless you don’t even have 5v_main at beginning(unlikely since console boots up.

if safe mode shows nothing as well, I suggest around HDMI encoder if any tvs diode or resistor blow since thunderstorm mentioned.

otherwise, replace a known working MN864739 and check again.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I’m already testing it on other monitors, but unfortunately the result is the same.

I’ll try Safe Mode if you think it might make a difference. I’ll update you as soon as I get back to working on it, probably tomorrow or the day after at the latest.

But after all the tests I’ve done, I’m almost certain the problem is the MN.

Update:

I carried out some further checks, hoping to find a short circuit on one of the lines or something similar, but I couldn’t find anything abnormal.

I also tried booting the console into Safe Mode, but unfortunately it made no difference. There is still no video signal at all.

I’ve ordered a replacement HDMI encoder. I’ll let you know if anything changes after replacing it.

Good evening everyone,

I received the replacement HDMI encoder this morning.

I installed it, and the console is now working perfectly again.

A few small capacitors around the chip came off during the replacement, which I’ll take care of tomorrow. But most importantly, the image is finally back on the screen.

Thank you all for your help.

I hope this post can be useful to anyone experiencing the same issue: no short circuits, correct diode-mode readings, but no video output.
