Another PS5 disc drive with no power [rewritten, I could not edit]

Hello all, first I want to thank all the people who helps others. I had learnt a lot on this forum, and signed up today to ask a question. I will copy-paste it since I’ve already posted it in another forum:

I am toubleshooting a PS5 with error SU-101312-8 that I bought for its cheap price.

I am in information phase, but already checked something:

  • Thin ribbon cable from the 3 microswitches had no continuity as it has been crushed. I replaced it with hope but nothing happened.
  • Ribbon cable from motherboard to disk drive board was damaged but had continuity in all its contacts. I strenghtened it with Kapton tape and it seemed to be OK. I’m receiving a spare one next week to replace it as well.
  • Mechanical parts of the drive seems to be good. Power cables continuities are good.

What I have read from my multimeter is:

  • I have continuity to ground (powered off) in DIFFERENT paths of optical drive board and PS5 board. I mean, If I put one probe in PS5 case, and the other in optical drive case does not give continuity. But it should, right?
  • I found continity (PS5 disconnected from electricity) from Pins 1, 2 and 3 of the connector for the Optical drive unit, on the PS5 motherboard. I thought it was a SMD fuse but I did not check it yet.
  • I’m pending to check this evening: with PS5 powered on, measure voltages on disk drive power connector.

Apart from that, my root issue is the same as many others observed: PS5 won’t accept any disk, it does nothing, eject button beeps, but does not activate the motor or anything. Because of that, I cannot update the firmware then I cannot play to CD games or downloaded ones.

I do not consider transforming the BluRay PS5 to digital one, I want to be able to read disks.

Given all the above, did any of you manage to solve an issue like this? I have trust in SMD capacitors/fuses under the disk drive power (the ones F5401 and F5402 referred by the user Calvin in several posts, I cannot post links, but they are too difficult to access to measure!), but the fact that having GND continuity for 3 out of 4 disk drive power pins crazes me a bit out…

Apart from that, is there any possibility to temporarily supply energy by jumpers to disk drive, just to test if the issue is the power, and eventually update the ps5?

Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this!

Edit: Important data, the PS5 is a 2020 unit, so I guess its EDM001. Also I have a spare PS3 slim MB, so maybe I can salvage any component from it.

Hello again,
I came back with an update:
My board is EDM-020, not the one I posted yesterday, sorry.
Today I have had access to the downside of the board, and measured F5401, F5402 and the capacitor continuities, to find F5402 and the cap are OK, but F5401 had no continuity. Next week I’m receiving the spares.

Is there anything else I can test?
Im replacing the 25 pin flex between mother and daughterboard, and the 6 pin flex cable, and the mentioned fuse, with hope of the PS5 being able to take discs and update!

Hey mate, any updates on this? I believe I have this exact issue.

Hello sir,

Yes! I have actually managed to get it working! I did just not update the post, as no one replied, and kept my “changelog” in Reddit.

As a summary, which I have typed there:
I managed to repair it: BD reader was somehow causing F5401 to blow. I tried but not succeded on troubleshooting it, but the fault was clearly on the bd drive. I replaced it for a second hand one I found online, and it worked flawlessly. (I kept the original daughterboard, if not, it would not have worked).

You can find the actual progress here (remove the spaces):

If I can help any further, please reply to the thread and I will help as much as my limited skill allows :sweat_smile:

Good luck on your repair!!

Legend, after taking apart my console I’ve also found that the F5401 fuse has no continuity. Ordered replacements yesterday, fingers crossed this is my only issue. I actually believe the fuse blew because a bug fried itself & created a short.

Really appreciate the info, very helpful in my troubleshooting. Now I’ve just gotta learn to Micro solder!

Nice! I hope that’s the only issue. It would be very nice to know why BD readers are causing fuses to blow… As muy PS5 is 2nd handed, I really don’t know if the previous owner broke anything, causing the fuse to blow…

It’s not necessary (I did not use It first time) but I recommend you using a $10 phone/pc microscope. Also be sure to have some flux and isopropylic alcohol.
I also had some previous experience in micro (or mini?) soldering, in Nintendo DS, and Switch Pro controllers, so It could be said i was not a first-timer, but I felt like that  the component is super small… I ordered 10 in AliExpress, and lost at least 4 of them

Good luck and if I can somehow help, reply here  I recommend you visiting the thread I linked, so you can see my “changelog”, as I checked a lot of things that were, or were not, related.
