Learning electronics repair, my sons old charcoal switch lite has some interesting symptoms I haven’t found a lot of results googling. whenever we plug in a charger to the lite, the charger breaks. it will only start working again when we unplug it from the wall and plug it back in. the lite doesn’t charge nor turn on. usb-c amp/voltage meter also goes dead when we plug it into the lite as well. I’m not super fussed about actually repairing the thing, its all about the experience/education for me. Any ideas?
its just similar idea to what make your house power circuit breaker shuts off. There is overload or short on the load/switch side and that make your charger self-protected/cut off
are there any avaliable diagrams, schematics to start hitting components with a multi to look for the short?
maybe first check how the usb-c pins look, then check if there’s a short to ground on the fuse near the usb-c port (marked red on the image)
the fuse is good. the usb c however, not so much. i am getting shorts on the caps around the m92 chip.
Yep, it sounds like you’d have to replace it, most likely along with the port, but if the pins inside it are not mangled or lifted, this may not be necessary. I keep hearing the m92 is the actual fuse in the Switch design.
