Hello,
I have a peculiar problem with my endless quest to fix a very temperamental PS5.
I am now stuck in a continuous BLOD with a following behaviour:
- Safe mode always works (hdmi fine?)
- Pairing of controller / turning on the console with it wirelessly works (BT fine?)
- I can install the system in safe mode without errors (SSD fine?)
Yet, in normal startup, I only get a continuous BLOD.
UART always shows these 3 codes in succession (all of them C0020303 - APU not responding):
C00200303 0000BC36 150000E5 00010000 217B 0036 2CCF 0000:07
C00200303 0000BC36 15000005 00010000 217B 0036 2CCE 0000:F1
C00200303 0000BC35 15000005 00010000 217B 0036 2CCC 0000:EE
All of them related to the wifi startup stage (217B).
Am I correct in assuming this error is not related to the i2c communication (SB initialising parts of the motherboard) as much as to the actual APU crashing on some part of the startup cause of another device connected to it?
Should I try YOLO-it and replace the wifi/BT module as that’s probably the only device left that’s connected to the PCI-E bus (except the SSD controller)? Or is there something else that could cause this that should be checked first?
Thank you so much! This is a bit infuriating, cause the console “almost” works.
UPDATE: Found out 3 knocked-off caps (filtering between the rail and ground) on the SSD rails on the bottom side, bellow the SSD controller. Replacing them (1 uF for the bigger ones, 0.1 uF for the small ones) moved me a step further - now I see a PS logo that hangs for half a minute and goes black.
However the light is still pulsing blue and UART is stating the exact same codes.
Does anybode have any ideas of what to do next? This is a very stubborn console.
I removed the wifi/bt shield and discovered the chip is getting visibly warm even during the moments when it’s not being used (safe mode). Is this normal?
It is approximately 2-3 degrees hotter than the surrounding PCB, similar to dialog ID etc.
On a similar topic, will PS5 boot without the module? I could just remove it and see if it stops hanging the apu.
Another significant update: Those error codes are generated during shutdown procedure, not on the black screen. That means, possibly, that this PS5 actually doesn’t report any errors at all.
At this point it seems like the OS is stalling on startup for unknown reason without reporting any hardware problems through UART.
So, what could be the case? Is there any way to read any logs? I tried to reinstall the system multiple times, but sadly none of them changed anything.
