PS5 No Power After Power Surge

Hello all! New to the forum; first post!

For some background: I’m just getting into electronic repairs. I purchased a soldering kit with a hot air resolder station and all the necessary items to do SMD soldering. I have some experience with soldering and general electronic repair; my specialty is TV backlighting (doesn’t involve soldering, but still a hobby of mine).

My first project was replacing an HDMI port on an Xbox Series S I picked up for $40. This project was a great success and I am currently using it!

My next project: I picked up a PS5 the other day for the low price of FREE! The lady I snagged it from said it was plugged in during an electrical storm and hasn’t been able to turn on since. After I picked it up, I plugged it in and checked for power and got nothing. No sounds, no lights. I tried putting it into safe mode to no avail.

I haven’t had time yet to crack it open. But when I do, what should be the first things to check?? I’m thinking there are some blown fuses or the PSU is bad. Checking fuses is easy enough, but my research tells me opening the PSU is a bad idea due to the risk involved.

I’m looking for CONSTRUCTIVE assistance here. Like I said, I’m new to this and want to learn. If possible, please help provide some resources I could look at, schematics, other threads, or something that may provide guidance.

I appreciate any constructive feedback and assistance!

The first things I would check:

  • is the psu delivering 12V
  • are 12V reaching the mainboard and are the common standby voltages lines present
