I’m having a very strange issue with my Nintendo Switch V2 after installing a Picofly RP2040 modchip.
Here is exactly what happened:
- I installed the modchip and soldered all required points.
- On first boot, the Switch successfully displayed the RP2040 logo and the “No SD Card” message.
- I was able to boot into the original Nintendo firmware (Switch OS) and everything worked normally.
- The display worked correctly.
- Touchscreen worked.
- Audio worked.
Then, while Switch OS was running, I inserted a microSD card into the SD card slot.
The moment I inserted the microSD card, the display immediately went black.
The console did NOT shut down:
- I could still hear system sounds.
- The touchscreen still responded.
- The system appeared to continue running.
After several forced reboots, I somehow managed to recover it once:
- The display came back.
- The RP2040 “No SD Card” screen appeared again.
- Switch OS booted normally again.
However, after inserting the microSD card a second time, the exact same thing happened:
- Instant black screen.
- Console still running in the background.
Now the situation is:
- Touchscreen works.
- System sounds work.
- Switch OS appears to boot.
- No image on the internal LCD.
- No image through the dock/HDMI.
- The backlight appears completely off.
- I have already removed the modchip and restored the eMMC to its original configuration.
- The RP2040 flex cable has also been disconnected.
- The problem still remains.
Since the console originally booted correctly and displayed both the RP2040 screen and Switch OS, I don’t think the Tegra SoC, GPU, LCD panel, or eMMC are completely dead.
Has anyone seen a similar issue before?
Could inserting the microSD card have caused a short, damaged a display-related component, or affected a signal line that controls video output?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
