Xbox Series X possibly dead SSD?

I just bought a Series X extremely cheap that is permanently stuck on the updating screen. Power cycles fail. Offline update fails (does start but when it powers off it doesn’t power back on) I can’t afford to get it repaired sadly, I was thinking the SSD is dead or has got badly corrupted. I did hardwire it to my internet too, but the percentage icon on the left is stuck at 0% and the icon on the right gets to 66% but then stops. Fan works, but sometimes when I put it into the trouble shooting mode to try a factory reset it then powers off and then goes back to the update screen where it then gets stuck again. Would it be worth dismantling it to get the SSD out to see if it works in a caddy attached to a PC? maybe run the check disc program? As if it does have alot of bad sectors then attempts to repair them, will that not wipe some crucial MS software on that particular sector? Or try something different?
